Around Hallstatt you can find a variety of possibilities to carry out the favourite of Nordic Sports. In the nature reserve Koppenwinkl in the neighbouring Obertraun, you can find a family-friendly cross-country skiing trail, which takes you across approx. 20 km of fields and meadows. In the Gosau valley, there are 35 km of trails waiting to be used. The trails start at the Sports Centre (close to the tourist office) and offer, among others, a practice trail for beginners and the village trail, which is one of the longest in the region with 13.1 km. A sports trail leads through the Gosauer Hintertal across 4 km and a particularly popular trail is the 7 km Märchenwald trail (fairytale trail) which follows the stream Gosaubach. The 4 km sun trail (Sonnenloipe) certainly lives up to its name. All trails in the vicinity of Hallstatt are tracked daily and can be used for free.
A vast variety of cross-country skiing trails are available across the Dachstein West region. North of the Hallstatt Lake, in Bad Goisern for instance, there is a high altitude cross-country centre, which awaits with circuits at the Predigtstuhl providing for excellent views over the Dachstein.
