Ski holidays Stelvio in the Vinschgau Valley – Idyllic Mountain Village in a Natural Paradise!

Stelvio

Italy's King Victor Emmanuel III recognised the natural beauty of the Ortler region and designated it the "Stelvio National Park" in 1935. In the heart of this natural scenery lies the municipality of Stilfs with around 1,200 inhabitants, just below South Tyrol's highest peak, the Ortler. The 3,905 m high mountain giant belongs to the Ortler-Cevedale group, which comprises several peaks between 3,500 and 4,000 m and offers some great skiing areas. The main town of the municipality is the village of Stilfs, which nestles uphill on the steep slopes of the Munwarter and Chavalatsch. Built in the typical style of a Romanesque clustered village, it has many small alleys between the densely packed rows of houses. Its unusual architecture and location give the village a very romantic feel.

Selvio, as Stilfs is called in Italian, can be reached via the famous Stilfser Joch road. The 2,758 m high mountain pass highlights the remoteness and unspoilt nature of this natural paradise. The road leads over 48, sometimes narrow hairpin bends to Lombardy.

The municipality of Stilfs is also a magnet for celebrities. For example, it is the home of skiing legend Gustav Thöni, who can still be found skiing there with guests today. The most famous mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, appreciates the region so much that he uses the alpine pastures for grazing his yaks and has built his Messner Mountain Museum here. A trip to see these impressive animals is particularly worthwhile for families, while art lovers will enjoy the exhibition in the "Ortles".

Ortles Region

Amidst the national park of Stilfserjoch, framed by 14 peaks, each above an altitude of 3,000, lies the Ortler region. Its named after the 3,905 m high, most well-known glacier in the eastern Alps. The grandiose landscape surrounding the Ortler captivates both visitors of winter and summer. Around the Ortler, you can experience pure skiing fun from November - May, including the impressive panoramic view of the Ortler, Cevedale, and the Königsspitze.
